A lot has happened over the last few weeks. Daneelya was caught having a tryst with Danny, the equipment foreman. The title foreman makes it sound like there is a whole crew under him, but no, he is just the guy who maintains and fixes the various printing and copying equipment. Daneelya was in tears for a week and stopped all baking, which I confess is the only reason I noticed that something was wrong. Then at the end of today’s shift she packed up her desk and slunk out the door. I was going to go after her to say something kind or at least supportive when the boss came up behind me and boomed into my ear that I could have her job if I wanted it, and so I missed my chance to thank her for all the goodies. I went into his office and he explained the salary and benefits. I accepted his offer without thinking, which believe it or not has health benefits and retirement…like I would live long enough to collect retirement if I had work this job for the next fifteen years.

I went to the annual labor day party and saw a horde of old friends which was very warm and pleasant. Sometimes I forget just how many people I know…not well, but know enough to have a few laughs and get caught up. I brought Catfish with me because I have been leaving the poor girl alone for days on end and I couldn’t bring myself to do it again. She made a big hit. She is small, about twelve pounds, and a cute kind of ugly that people seem smitten by. She had a great time which helped to alleviate my guilt just enough to be able to go back to work.

When I got back to work Monday (no day off for this crew) I realized that Danny was still there. I asked around why Daneelya was the one who had to leave and each one looked at me like I had been living off planet all of my life. When I put a few personal things on my new desk, I realized that becoming a full time employee impressed no one in the group of eleven, including myself. Today, I feeling like this might have been a big mistake.

A Place to Find Me by Kate
Cassie is a forty-six-year-old waitress living in Texas. Her lover has left. Her best friend has moved. If Cassie were paying attention, she would notice that her life is a mess. But she has a dog and a house full of memories to keep her warm at night until her mother dies when she suddenly becomes head of a family business--and not a particularly friendly family at that. She finds solace in the arms of an employee only to find out that the lovely woman comes at a very high price. But it isn't until tragedy blind sides Cassie that she is able to step into a world of purpose and hope. If only Haley hadn't come along...
